Special Scholarship
The GEF Scholarship Committee has selected three graduating WMHS seniors to receive the first GEF scholarships. Maria Oliveri, Candace Sacre, and Brittany Shifflett each will receive a $1,000 scholarship to pursue their continuing education. Ms. Oliveri, of Ruckersville, is the daughter of Frank and Loretta Oliveri. She plans to pursue a degree in nursing at the University of Virginia. The daughter of Joseph and Debra Sacre of Ruckersville, Candace Sacre plans to study nursing at Piedmont Community College. Ms. Shifflett, also of Ruckersville, plans to attend Ferrum College to study Environmental Science and Wildlife Conservation. She is the daughter of Scarlett and Robert Shifflett. The scholarships were given to the students on behalf of Marida Lamb, a third-grade teacher at Nathanael Greene Elementary School.
Creative Instructional Grant
At a reception on January 14, the foundation awarded each of the following 11 teachers a $500 Creative
Instructional Grant for the 2007/08 school year:

Greene Elementary School:
Linda Haselton
for Electronic Field Trip, Williamsburg – an interactive learning opportunity especially for students who cannot afford to go on field trips.
Scott Wills for materials to upgrade the school’s Performing Arts Center and promote the theater and music programs.

From Ruckersville
Elementary School:
Judy Holder for digital cameras to support instruction across the curriculum and provide a visual aspect to learning.
Donna Shifflett for Costume Sets, Reader's Theater – a reading program that promotes reading by having students read scripts and perform as the characters living in the time period they are studying.

From Greene
County Primary School:
Bridget Lambert and
Natalie Kozel
for Home Lending Library Materials – to encourage children reading at home by purchasing materials that will allow students to take books home through a classroom library system.
Jennifer Murphy for Iditarod Reading Program – a reading motivator program for struggling readers.
Sharon Morris for color printer for publishing students’ work in Language Arts.
Tina Arritt for Smartboard Laptop to assist students
in becoming more familiar with the use of technology in their classrooms and allowing them to incorporate more technology in their social
studies, science, and reading programs.

Monroe High School:
Lori Tawney – Dance Revolution to help promote adolescents’ interest in physical health and well-being; this program is geared for students not involved in athletics who are having difficulty getting physically fit; it will help to address the rising obesity problem in youth.
